How to Examine an Autistic Child or Adult. In order to properly examine a potential autistic case, the nature of the disorder requires a team of specialists. Autism’s symptoms are so varied across a range of medical disciplines that each symptom must be tested and then either discounted or included. There is no such thing as a typical autism case. Each child will show different combinations of symptoms in differing degrees. One child may demonstrate adequate language skill but be unable to interact socially. Accordingly, the team of specialists may include psychologists, neurologists, psychiatrists, therapists, speech pathologists and even teachers, an Autism treatments plan may be implemented. Because language acquisition may be slowed by hearing loss, a hearing test is often the first in an array of tests performed.
